Thierry Henry Handball Controversy

Thierry Henry was considering quitting football because of the controversy that surrounded his double handball in the match against Republic of Ireland. The Captain of the French team had to face a huge amount of criticism because of the way he arranged a decisive goal against Ireland in the playoff for the world cup last year in November.

Due to this Ireland’s Football Association lodged a complaint with FIFA which demanded that a replay of the tied match be supplied. This demand was rejected but Henry’s integrity remained in question after the event. This continuous scrutiny really stressed the player to a great extent and he has now formally admitted that it almost made him quit football altogether.

In the match against Ireland Thierry Henry got into position for a goal and just as the ball came to him after a bounce it seemed that Henry positioned the ball with his left hand into his lap and then kneed the ball to his teammate who was in front of the goal in a very open position and he eventually scored the goal. This goal helped the French team win the match, but Ireland was very disturbed with the loss and demanded official clip of the goal from FIFA which was denied.

Henry had to face a lot of pressure from the media and the public as well because as it was obvious from the footage there was a clear hand involvement in the manipulation of the ball in the lap. The shot was taken from behind Henry, still it was quite obvious.
